Meet the Coaches!
- Name/Day: Scott Reckers / Sunday
- How many years have you been coaching/what teams: I am new to coaching, but have been swimming for 12 years.
- Were you ever a swimmer? If so, what was your favorite stroke/event: Free / 400 Medley Relay
- Why did you volunteer to coach our team: I volunteered to coach because it seems like a good opportunity to build some leadership and stay close to the sport!
- What quality is most valuable for a swimmer to have and why: I think the most valuable quality a swimmer can have is a passion to swim- if they love swimming they’ll make it through even the most boring and toughest practices and come back the next day.
- Name/Day: Kylie Baker / Monday
- How many years have you been coaching/what teams: I coached the Blue Heron Piranhas for a couple of summers.
- Were you ever a swimmer? If so, what was your favorite stroke/event: Breaststroke / 50 Br
- Why did you volunteer to coach our team: I volunteered because I love the team atmosphere and I think it will be a great opportunity for me to explore something I find interesting and use the knowledge I have learned over the years to help other people be successful.
- What quality is most valuable for a swimmer to have and why: I think one quality that is valuable is being passionate and wanting to not just watch yourself succeed but your team also. I also think that it is important to know that swimming is fun when you let it be, club swim is a way for some people to relieve the stress they put on themselves and focus that energy into having a good time!
- Name/ Day: Jack Kangas / Tuesday
- How many years have you been coaching/what teams: About 25 years - I started as a swimmer with the team - oh, awhile back. I have ONLY been a coach for this team, and that is fine by me.
- Were you ever a swimmer? If so, what was your favorite stroke/event: Yes, once a swimmer - always a swimmer - even though it may not be current. I was (and still am) a distance and 400 IM'er - just happen to be out of practice at the moment.
- Why did you volunteer to coach our team: It just sort of happened - over time (a long time), I went from creating workouts to being a coach.
I am still learning what that means and that is what is challenging (and fun) for me. It is a challenge to figure out when to interrupt your flow and when not to. - What quality is most valuable for a swimmer to have and why: Curiosity and a hint of "bravado" (aka swagger, panache, confidence),
- To have expectations (albeit realistic ones) for yourself (and for the those around you and for the coaches too). That you use every practice to "get" something (a time, a perfect stroke or a state of body/mind), and if it doesn't materialize - there is the next practice.
- The internal and external smile - to remember why this sport has been fun, in the past, and will continue to be fun - as long as we want it to.
- That this club is ALL of you, get to know those around you (I have always been surprised by the quality of "people" who swim, at all levels, and especially as adults). It is there if you want to find it.
- The ability see the big picture - that no one set or practice defines us. We can swim for so many different physiological benefits (too many to list!).
- That punching and churning the water is a healthier response than verbally (or even physically) punching someone in the face.
- ASK questions of coaches and other swimmers, this is not a top down organization (there will be no yelling)
- Name/Day: Ryan Senchyshak / Wednesday
- How many years have you been coaching/what teams: I have been coaching for the last 3 years at my local country club- St. Clair Country Club
- Were you ever a swimmer? If so, what was your favorite stroke/event: Freestyle / 50 Free
- Why did you volunteer to coach our team? I wanted to coach the team so I could do my part to help the team be successful and do well at Nationals!
- What quality is most valuable for a swimmer to have and why: I think the most valuable quality for a swimmer is determination. Anyone can achieve their goals if they set their mind to it.
- Name/Day: Ben Martinez / Thursday
- How many years have you been coaching/what teams: 4 years coaching for Hudson Heat and Country Club of Hudson
- Were you ever a swimmer? If so, what was your favorite stroke/event: Breaststroke / 100 IM
- Why did you volunteer to coach our team? I’ve been on club swimming for three years and have loved it, so I would like to give something back to the club through coaching. Also, I love seeing my teammates improve and want to help that happen anyway I can.
- What quality is most valuable for a swimmer to have and why: Be a goldfish. There are going to be good and bad swims and practices. It’s important to have a short memory and take it one day at a time. Also, asking questions is just as important. Not only does it show that you care and are invested, but it will also help you improve.
